In 1980, during one of the evening car rides with my Dad, he talked me into taking some piano lessons. At first I didn’t have a clue of what to expect. But then I agreed. My sister, Fazeela, was already taking some lessons from Mrs. Amaraseyna (long time music teacher at Majeediyya School).
I remember playing the first three notes during the first lesson – Do Re & Mi on the piano at Mrs. Amaraseyna’s. The workbooks that I was working on were John Thompson’s series. Then she gave me some home work to do, writing the clefs and notes. This was my first introduction to music theory. Even on the first day, I played the first notes correctly. Perhaps my ears were working even then, even without any musical knowledge.
My piano lessons continued once or twice a week, for about an hour each, for the next three years or so. Study mainly included exercises, simplified classical masterpieces and contemporary classics.
