Piano Lessons

In 1980, during one of the evening car rides with my Dad, he talked me into taking some piano lessons. At first I didn’t have a clue of what to expect. But then I agreed. My sister, Fazeela, was already taking some lessons from Mrs. Amaraseyna (long time music teacher at Majeediyya School).

I remember playing the first three notes during the first lesson – Do Re & Mi on the piano at Mrs. Amaraseyna’s. The workbooks that I was working on were John Thompson’s series. John Thompson Grade 1 Then she gave me some home work to do, writing the clefs and notes. This was my first introduction to music theory. Even on the first day, I played the first notes correctly. Perhaps my ears were working even then, even without any musical knowledge.

My piano lessons continued once or twice a week, for about an hour each, for the next three years or so. Study mainly included exercises, simplified classical masterpieces and contemporary classics.
